Suggested Counseling Strategies for Sexual Addiction
Five Key Crossroads
There are many steps in the journey toward recovery and healing for the sexual addict and his wife. At least five of these steps represent critical crossroads for the wounded couple. The decisions made at these five crossroads determine whether the couple remains stuck in pain and defeat or moves forward toward healing.
A. The situation has been blown out of proportion and he/she does not have a problem
– or –
B. He/she does have a problem and needs to get help.
A. Continue to put up with her husband’s addictive behavior
– or –
B. Will find the strength to confront her husband with ‘tough love.’
A. Blame herself for her husband’s addictive behavior
– or –
B. Refuse to accept responsibility for his wrong choices.
A. Choose to seek professional help
– or –
B. Choose not to seek help. If they do seek help, they will either seek it from those who are experienced in treating sexual addiction, or from those who are not.
A. Opt for a superficial “quick fix”
– or –
B. They will embrace the long, difficult process of recovery and allow God to deeply heal them.
